A Walking Guide Booklet Sydneys Engineering Heritage and other sites. Compiled by Michael Clarke for the Engineering Heritage Committee Sydney. This is a considerably expanded edition of the heritage award-winning Sydney's Engineering Heritage - walks in the city. It is a unique guide to 83 heritage sites in the area bounded by Millers Point, the Botanic Gardens, Mortuary Station, Powerhouse Museum, Darling Harbour and Pyrmont Bridge. The book is a valuable addition to the heritage literature about Sydney, pulling together much of its engineering and architectural heritage in an historical context. Fascinating glimpses into the past include how the Farm Cove seawall helped stem the stench of sewage pollution and how the time ball on the Observatory works, the stories of the One O'clock Gun, the fortifications of Sydney town and the power station that never lit a light bulb, as well as other interesting anecdotes that give life to the city. The book is well illustrated and the maps, which also show the approximate original shoreline, will help guide readers on their walking tours of exploration around Sydney. Being easy to read and understand, it will not only aid those unfamiliar with the city and its history, but will help younger people gain a greater sense of their historical inheritance. Thus it would be a valuable guide for use by schools. Sydney's Engineering Heritage helps celebrate the work of the engineers and particularly those who with the architects, laid the foundations of the city we treasure today.
