We have put together a collection of self guide tour pamphlets for those who wish to visit the engineering heritage sites of Sydney and NSW at their own pace. Each of the guides is a three page Acrobat document that can be read and printed in black & white or colour on most home or office computers.

PARRAMATTA RIVER BRIDGES

Self-guided tour by RiverCat Ferry

This self-guided tour describes how you can explore the many crossings (bridge, tunnel and ferry) across Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River as you travel by RiverCat from Circular Quay to Parramatta or reverse. The journey from Sydney to Parramatta takes a little over an hour.

Services depart from Wharf No 5 at Circular Quay. You can also join the RiverCat at other points. Information and printed timetables are available from the kiosk at Circular Quay.

At Parramatta, you can return to Sydney by RiverCat or by one of the frequent fast train services that take you back to the city in 30 minutes.

The guide, is based, with minor changes, on a brochure written by Engineering Heritage Committee member Dr. Don Fraser for publication as a brochure by the Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales. Historic Bridges of the

Hunter Valley

Self-guided tour by car

Starting and ending at Maitland in the Hunter Valley, 200 km from Sydney, this day tour shows a comprehensive selection of the types of road bridges built in New South Wales in the second half of the nineteenth century.

Extending the basic tour to include a drive to Dungog allows you see good examples of all the four main types of historic timber truss bridges of which there were at one time over 400 in New South Wales. Now only around one fifth of this total remain, and their number declines each year.

Maritime Industries

Self-guided tour by Sydney Harbour ferry

The deep waters of Sydney Harbour enabled goods to be loaded and unloaded to overseas or coastal shipping at many points around the shoreline. Many industries took advantage of this potential, and established factories or production facilities right on the Harbour foreshores.

These establishments are fast disappearing to make way for modern development, but their stories can still be told.

Self-guided tour by car or public transport

This is a guide to short tours of some of Sydney’s colonial fortifications. Although they were built to counter the threat of foreign raiding parties, none ever fired a shot in anger.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Self-guided walk across the bridge.

The bridge walk is about 1.5 km. It starts at Milsons Point Railway Station, a short distance from the north end of the bridge, and ends at the stairs leading down to Cumberland Street in the city, a short distance from Circular Quay and Wynyard Station. There are stairs leading to the footway at each end of the bridge, with no wheelchair access. Allow two hours for the walk, including a visit to the pylon lookout and museum at the southern end of the bridge. There is no charge to walk across the bridge by the footway, but there is a charge for the optional visit to the lookout and museum.

Ryde to Tempe

Self-guided cycle tour discovering the history and industrial heritage of Rhodes, Concord, Canterbury and the Cooks River

The tour is about 23 km. It starts at Settlers Park, Ryde, near the railway bridge crossing the Parramatta River, and ends at Kendrick Park, Tempe, near Tempe Station and the Princes Highway. The route is mostly off-road with easy riding conditions.

Sydney Water

A self-guided day tour by car of the water supply dams south of Sydney

In this whole-day tour by car you will see the major dams, canals and pipelines that provide water to Sydney. Some of these works still in use were built around 1880. The round trip tour from Sydney is around 350 km., all on good roads and motorway. The tour is through attractive countryside south of Sydney, and there are good picnic areas and playgrounds at the dam sites.

Sydney Harbour Islands

Self-guided tour by Sydney Harbour ferry

In two different Sydney Harbour ferry trips, one to the east side of Circular Quay, the other to the west, you can view most of the 14 islands of Sydney Harbour and stop off at some. This guide summarises the history of the islands and their part in the industrial and engineering development of Sydney.

Steam at the Powerhouse Museum

A self-guide visit to the engine section of the Powerhouse Museum.

The Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo Sydney has an excellent collection of historic steam engines including an original Boulton & Watt Beam Engine. This guide assists the visitor understand the development of the steam engine and the significance of the collection at the museum.

Industry on Three of Sydney Harbour's Islands

A self-guide visit to three of Sydney Harbour's Islands; Fort Denison, Cockatoo Island & Goat Island

There are regular guided tours of three of Sydney's well known islands; Fort Denison, Cockatoo Island & Goat Island. Each is worth visiting for its Engineering Heritage. This brochure outlines the industrial and engineering history of these islands supplementing the information provided on the guided tours.

RTA Self-guided Tour Brochures

The NSW Road & Traffic Authority has developed, with the assistance of the IEA Heritage Committee, a number of self guided tour brochures for use through various regions of NSW.

The brochures outline various self drive tours through areas such as the Southern Highlands, the Blue Mountains and the Hunter Valley and indicate the variuos historic and heritage sites to visit along the way.

Tour Brochures can be obtained from most RTA Registration Offices in NSW or by downloading them in PDF format from the RTA's web site.
