We have put together a
collection of self guide tour pamphlets for those who wish to visit the engineering
heritage sites of Sydney and NSW at their own pace. Each
of the guides is a three page Acrobat document that can be read and printed in black &
white or colour on most home or office computers. Click on the title of the guide to download The tour guide consists of a PDF file which you can download and read using Acrobat Reader. If you do not have Acrobat Reader
then.
Services depart from Wharf No 5 at Circular Quay. You can also join the RiverCat at other points. Information and printed timetables are available from the kiosk at Circular Quay. At Parramatta, you can return to Sydney by RiverCat or by one of the frequent fast train services that take you back to the city in 30 minutes. The guide, is based, with minor changes, on a brochure written by Engineering Heritage Committee member Dr. Don Fraser for publication as a brochure by the Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales. The Institution gratefully acknowledges the assistance of the Authority and the designers of the brochure, Montague-Leung Design, and their permission to use the material in this guide. Self-guided tour by car Starting and ending at Maitland in the Hunter Valley, 200 km from Sydney, this day tour shows a comprehensive selection of the types of road bridges built in New South Wales in the second half of the nineteenth century. Extending the basic tour to include a drive to Dungog allows you see good examples of all the four main types of historic timber truss bridges of which there were at one time over 400 in New South Wales. Now only around one fifth of this total remain, and their number declines each year. The Engineering Heritage of Sydneys Self-guided tour by Sydney Harbour ferry The deep waters of Sydney Harbour enabled goods to be loaded and unloaded to overseas or coastal shipping at many points around the shoreline. Many industries took advantage of this potential, and established factories or production facilities right on the Harbour foreshores. These establishments are fast disappearing to make way for modern development, but their stories can still be told.
Sydneys Colonial Fortifications Self-guided tour by car or public transport This is a guide to short tours of some of Sydneys colonial fortifications. Although they were built to counter the threat of foreign raiding parties, none ever fired a shot in anger.
Self-guided walk across the bridge. The bridge walk is about 1.5 km. It starts at Milsons Point Railway Station, a short distance from the north end of the bridge, and ends at the stairs leading down to Cumberland Street in the city, a short distance from Circular Quay and Wynyard Station. There are stairs leading to the footway at each end of the bridge, with no wheelchair access. Allow two hours for the walk, including a visit to the pylon lookout and museum at the southern end of the bridge. There is no charge to walk across the bridge by the footway, but there is a charge for the optional visit to the lookout and museum.
Self-guided cycle tour discovering the history and industrial heritage of Rhodes, Concord, Canterbury and the Cooks River The tour is about 23 km. It starts at Settlers Park, Ryde, near the railway bridge crossing the Parramatta River, and ends at Kendrick Park, Tempe, near Tempe Station and the Princes Highway. The route is mostly off-road with easy riding conditions. The free brochure Ryde to Botany Bay Cycleway produced by the Roads and Traffic Authority contains a map of the route and detailed directions. For a copy phone RTA on (02) 9218 6816.
A self-guided day tour by car of the water supply dams south of Sydney In this whole-day tour by car you will see the major dams, canals and pipelines that provide water to Sydney. Some of these works still in use were built around 1880. The round trip tour from Sydney is around 350 km., all on good roads and motorway. The tour is through attractive countryside south of Sydney, and there are good picnic areas and playgrounds at the dam sites.
