The Australian Historic Engineering Plaquing Programme

Since 1984, The Institution has placed plaques on selected historic engineering works throughout Australia. The programme is ongoing, with several new plaques awarded each year. Up to the end of 2001, nearly 100 works had been plaqued.

Plaqued works in Sydney Division

In addition to the plaques awarded under the Australian Historic Engineering Plaquing Programme, Sydney Division has awarded a further four Engineering Heritage Plaques to works that are of particular significance in the area. These are also included in the following list.

At the end of 2001, there were 40 plaqued works from the Sydney Division, of which 13 were designated as National Engineering Landmarks, 23 have Historic Engineering Marker plaques, and four have Sydney Division Engineering Heritage Plaques. In addition, two of the National Engineering Landmarks, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme, have been designated as International Historic Engineering Landmarks by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

In the plaque description pages, the organisation named as 'owner' is the one that owned or had custody of the work when the plaque was presented. In some cases the present owner or custodian is different, or is known by a different name.
