Balmain's Industrial History | |||||||||||||||||||||
Touring Guide Developed by Leichhardt Council |
The tranquility of Balmain's narrow urban streets today does not reflect the bustle of Balmains working past. Balmain was a working mans suburb and was an important facet of the now declining "Working Harbour of Sydney". Balmain was home to a variety of industries that supported the maritime city of Sydney. Industries such as ship repairs, soap manufacture, coal mining and many other maritime services clung to the edge of the harbour, their transportation link to the city and the markets they served. Below are just some of those businesses now long forgotten.
